Gas Stations Discussion - Are gas stations ripping you off?

Review by Anonymous on 2001-09-13
In the midst of a national tradegy, some gas stations are trying to make a quick buck. Is it happening in your area? What do you think should be done about it?

I think it is absolutely ridiculous! They should be ashamed!

Unfortunately they can do whatever they want to, our only choice is to find another gas station.

I live in Ohio and I've seen gas stations mark their prices as high as $4 a gallon! I think legal action should be taken against these criminals.

It is called Capitalism, they can do whatever they want. Normally we would have the choice of not buying from them, which would cause their prices to go down. But in some situations where the stations ban together, some people have no choice. Completely unfair, but legal.

I think they should be forced to sell gas at half price for the next few days!

I believe the Attorney General of each state is starting to investigate this. Hopefully they will put a stop to it!

I think the states have pretty much taken care of this now. I haven't seen high (or at least unjustly) prices in a few days. It is good see the government stepping in and helping out.

Re: gas quality -- I have been told Arco gas causes carbon build-up on valves and that major brands like Chevron and Texaco do not; also that the Techron in Chevron also helps to prevent. Has anyone else heard this?

I live in Alaska and gas prices have always been high. You would think since we pump oil out of the ground out gas prices would be a bit more reasonable. I live in Wasilla which is 40 miles North of Anchorage. Gas prices are at least 12 cents a more a gallon then in Anchorage. I try and purchase gas when I drive to Anchorage. 1 month ago I purchased gas at Costco for $134.9 for regular unleaded and here in Wasilla it was between $1.42.9-$1.46.9. I noticed gas prices have jumped to $1.58.9, and I'm sure we:ll see at least $1.70.9 before summer is over. That would be a record high for this area. What's weird is....why do all the different brands of gas companies have their gas prices "FIXED" at the same price on the same day? I have to give Costco and Carrs gas stations credit for keeping their prices 2-3 cents cheeper then every other gas station. It's PRICE FIXING plain and simple. I thought our elected officials and the State of Alaska were looking into this price fixing scandal, but once again we've been had. Come election time somebody will think to bring this issue up again. Plus summer is just around the corner, the gas companies have to gouge the tourists. Did you know that as "Alaskans" we can't buy the same oil that we pump out of the ground? This was just my 3 cents worth!
