Hampton Inn & Suites Complaint - On line booking price Changes - Should have gone with TA reccommendation - Hotel Reservation practices

Hotel Reservation practices - Complaint
Review by Buckeye Traveler on 2010-06-13
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- We were planning our first trip to New York for 3 nights. I had done much research on NYC hotels around Times Square. Our TA could get us the Marriott Marquis for $1029 for the three nights for the 3 of us. Using AAA Discount, the Hampton Inn Times Square was coming up $1250 for the three nights. In spite of the $200 difference I was still pushing for the Hampton because of its free breakfast, free Internet, better rating on Trip Advisor and the fact that it was a smaller hotel (300 rooms vs. 1900) meaning potentially better service.

The TA still tried to convince us of the Marriott and so I hesitated a couple days to book because we were still wavering. I finally made the decision to go with the Hampton Inn Times Square North and when I went back to the Hampton's site, the cost of the room for the three of us had climbed to over $1350 for the three nights! I reluctantly booked it just so that the price wouldn't go up again.

The more I have thought about it, the Hampton is no longer worth that much more than the Marriott. When I return home from another trip on Wednesday of this week, I am going back to my TA and take the Marriott and then go in and cancel the Hampton Times Square North.

Whoever heard of a Hampton being more expensive than a Marriott! So much for being loyal to one brand, everyone told me to take the Mariott when it was $200 cheaper... but now I will.

You seem to be under the belief that hotel rates are static and unchanging. They aren't. Many hotels are much less expensive the further out that you book them, and the rates go up as it gets closer to the travel time and rooms are scarcer. There's no guarantee that the Marriott will still be at the price you were quoted. For what it's worth, I have two nights at another hotel in New York in August for $140 a night because I booked the trip months ago.

Just like an airline ticket, the more you wait the higher the price will be. NYC is NYC, it doesn't matter what brand hotel you use they are all expensive.
