Econo Lodge, Benton AR Complaint - Filthy Econo Lodge - Hotel

Review by SaMoore on 2010-06-15
BENTON, ARKANSAS -- On a cross country trip to the east coast and then back to TX my family decided to stay at Econo Lodge Hotels. The fact that they take pets sealed the deal for us as it meant out pup could go with us. We stayed at the Texarkana TX location for 2 days and it was great, friendly staff, clean grounds and comfortable room. We also stayed in Knoxville TN and the room was even better and the staff just as professional.

However we made the mistake of driving later than usual and we saw an Econo Lodge sign in Benton AR. I checked in after dark and we moved the kids and the dog to the room. Then I started to look around. The rooms were standard Econo Lodge, nothing wrong there until you noticed the feces on the bathroom wall. There was garbage piled under the stairwells and in the pool, broken furniture, deflated water rafts, food packaging and cigarette butts. The trash cans in the hallways reeked and you could smell them down the corridors. The walkways wee so grimy that your shoes kind of stuck to them. I took a bunch of pictures as well.

This Econo Lodge did not offer breakfast but it did have an attached Denny's and offered 10% off if you ate there while staying in the hotel. When I went to pick up food I was approached by a staff member covered in open soars who told me their cc machine was out and asked that I pay in cash. When I explained I had no cash she asked that I find an ATM to pull cash from. I was then approached by a waitress that told me there was nothing wrong with their cc machine and that the staff member was a 'meth head' trying to pocket the cash.

All in all I would say stay in an Econo Lodge but not the one in Benton AR.

The second I saw the condition of the room I would have gotten my money back, left, and maybe called the local health department.

It's what we should have done, but we did not really get a good look around until the sun started to come up a few hours in. I have contacted choice hotels and am waiting for a call back. You would think they would want to know if one of their hotels is so filthy to be possibly uninhabitable. I wondered if perhaps this whole town has been struck with a meth epidemic.

I got a response from the hotel saying that they would look into their housekeeping issues and offering me a free stay within 6 months and with proper notice. Pretty sure I will never take them up on that offer but I'm glad to hear that they will "check into their housekeeping" practices.
