Moving Complaint - Do NOT use a company by the name of Moving & Relocation/A. Professional Movers out of Hackensack, NJ

Review by BZeigerman on 2010-06-16
HACKENSACK, NEW JERSEY -- Please be advised this company has been ripping people off for years. I, as well as many others, have been quoted one price upon booking the move, generally in the range of $400 - $500, then once all of your personal belongings are on the truck, they demand payment in cash before they agree to unload the truck. You are forced to pay a final bill that is generally double, sometimes even triple, what you were quoted. I, for example, was quoted $420 for my move by a woman named Katelyn. On moving day, they showed up late, showed up in a Budget Rental Truck (not even a company owned vehicle), loaded my belongings, followed me to my new home, then asked for their payment. I asked for an itemized bill, which they produced, stating the final cost for my move was in fact $936. I protested this total, called the office, asked to speak with Katelyn, and was told she was not available. I spoke with a supervisor who informed me these were all standard moving fees that I should have been aware of. I told her that Katelyn never mentioned these fees and she basically told me that was too bad and they would round the bill down from $936 to $900. Not exactly what I had in mind... The foreman said that if I didn't pay the $900 in cash they would be forced to take my belongings and put them into storage for a fee of $1300. I would then be responsible for paying the moving fee in addition to the $1300, once an agreement could be reached between myself and the company. Clearly I was not about to pay $1300 to store my belongings, so I paid the $900 and signed the contract with PAID UNDER PROTEST written under my name. I've called every day since my move to speak with Katelyn, she still seems to be unavailable... I'm looking to gather together as many people as I can to organize a class action suit against this company, which also happens to be opperating under several different DBAs at the same address: 123 South Newman Street, Hackensack, NJ. Their phone number is 1-800-550-9055. If you have been ripped off by this company or if you know someone who has, please contact me at movingdispute@gmail. com

"Who needs a house out in Hackensack?
Is that all you get for your money?"

I almost bought a house in Hackensack once, but upon final inspection, the basement was under water.

Hiring a moving company can be risky. As you have now found out, once they have your stuff on the truck, they can pretty much do what they want. Writing PAID UNDER PROTEST on the bill was a good idea. I guess you could take them to small claims court, but I'm not sure it would be worth your while.

I used a moving company twice and did a lot of checking first. While it's no guarantee that everything will go as planned, it does increase your chances.

Thanks for the heads up, BZeigerman!

It seems that many moving companies pull this sort of crap. Anyone who has been scammed by this (or any other) unscrupulous moving company should file a complaint with their state's Department of Consumer Affairs and Attorney General's Office!

Did you receive a written quote for $420?
Posted by BZeigerman on 2010-06-18:
Once I recieved the email confirming my moving date, I asked them to provide me with the quote in writing, they never sent it to me. I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of using a moving company, so I didn't know that this was something I absolutely needed to have. I find it hard to believe that a judge would rule in favor of this company as opposed to the large number of people who have filed complaints agaist them for exactly the same problem. The itemized bill alone shows overly inflated costs for things that should already be included in the per hour rate. I have called them every day since the move asking to speak with the woman who quoted me and I can't even get them to put her on the phone. When I ask to speak with another supervisor I get put on hold permanently. It's obvious they know what they are doing is wrong, their actions prove that. I'm still going to pursue this in court.
