EZ LUBE-- Costa Mesa, CA Complaint - Oil Filter / Oil change Rip Off 6-16-10

Review by Steaming on 2010-06-17
COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA -- I took my 1998 VW Passat to this location 6-16-10 for oil and filter change and check tire pressure. This was my first experience with EZ Lube and was shocked to hear the estimate at $72.99 using Castrol Synthetic oil (5W30). I told them that I had a spare oil filter to use so they subtracted $2.00 and took off an additional 10% when I said their cost for this service is 3 times what I normally pay. No other service options were offered.

I asked how much oil my car would take and their data showed 3.7 quarts. While waiting for completion, I looked at the invoice and noticed that "up to 5 quarts" were charged to me even though I would need less than 4 quarts. When work was finished, I questioned this practice and wanted to speak to the Manager. He stated that up to 5 quarts were included in cost, so I demanded that if I'm paying for 5 quarts, I want 5 quarts. He tried to dance around the the "included" portion but since other customers were listening he said "I'll put the 5th quart container on your front seat."

Assuming that they actually added 3.7 quarts, my dipstick should be near full or at the top end of the dipstick. I checked it before driving away and found it at about the half way point or 2 quarts!! I didn't have another conversation with the Manager over this issue but I suspect that most customers are being scammed in three ways.

1. Billing for outrageous costs for the service ( up to 3 times).
2. Customers not checking paperwork for the number of quarts billed and not asking how much oil is needed for make / model.
3. Customers are being shorted on quarts actually added to their vehicle.

When they gave you the estimate, how come you didn't just drive off? That's a ridiculously high cost for an oil change.

I have the same question...why did you give them the go-ahead knowing how expensive it was going to be?

Other than overcharging you for 5 qts, when it should have been 4...the price for the oil change sounds right. Synthetic oil is more expensive...but you can also go longer in-between changes. 5k vs 3k miles.
