Weekend Overstock Warehouse Complaint - Questionable sales practices

Review by donga on 2010-06-30
CENTENNIAL, COLORADO -- We purchased 2 recliners with the clear understanding that we wanted them to be new and in boxes, not from the store display. We were aware we would have to wait for them to come in. However, when they were delivered, we received 2 chairs with dust, wrinkles, and store price tags--clearly straight off the showroom floor. After many calls with our sales lady and 2 different store managers, we were told by both our sales girl, and the manager, that we could not get our money back (which is what we wanted because we felt we did not get what we paid for) unless we paid a 20% restocking fee. We agreed to take delivery in shrink wrap, though I informed the manager that I would report them to the Better Business Bureau. When delivered, the chairs arrived in BOXES as we had originally requested, and had been told that "chairs never come in boxes." We believe they take the recliners out of the boxes, install the backs, then wrap them in shrink wrap to appear as brand new, just to save on time involved in the delivery. But that was not what we asked for, nor were we informed that that would be the case at the time of purchase. New chairs arriving in the box assures us a better chance of getting an undamaged chair, and to send it back if it is damaged. Unacceptable sales practice: be honest with customer about what they are getting.

I found this review confusing. Did the product arrive with wrinkles and price tags or within boxes?

Being in a box doesn't necessarily mean right off the assembly line. The merchandise could still be damaged. I would worry more about the condition of the chairs than the packaging. Dust, wrinkles and a store price tag are certainly indications that you received floor models. However, if the chairs are delivered in the condition you expected, I wouldn't worry too much about how they got there.
