Complaint - Package failure to include essential information

Review by hilllbilly on 2010-07-02
MILLVILLE, NEW JERSEY -- I purchased a Wearever pressure cooker last week. One main reason it was purchased was to use for canning pints of vegetables. I have owned 3 previous pressure cookers and my mother owned others I have used. All were designed to use for food preparation AND for canning. This product had NO information on the box that would have warned me that it was not recommended for use in canning. Only after the purchase as I read the instructions did I learn this. I feel I wasted $44+ tax because of inadequate information on the box. How is a consumer to make informed purchases if the information needed is not included on the box?

Can you return it for an exchange or refund?

How is it not suitable for canning. All of my aunts and my mom and the woman we lived on the farm with as children used their pressure cookers for canning, as well as making fudge and popcorn, etc. The only problem was one aunt who was cooking beans in her pressure cooker and was in the living room with my uncle when it sounded like a bomb went off. She had repainted the kitchen in bean, and the top of the cooker was lying on the floor with the sealing lip torn off like tissue paper.

The manufacturers say that the bottom of their pressure cooker is round (IT IS!) and therefore would not heat up evenly to provide proper pressure to safely can. I have used pressure cookers for canning for nearly 50 years and think their excuse is rather stupid BUT if they are going to sell the cookers with this warning, it should be on the back of the box. I had already used the cooker to cook pinto beans when I read all of the instructions so it is not appropriate to return it.
