Habitat for Humanity East Bay (Oakland) CA Complaint - Cars for Homes Project Oakland, CA

Review by drdaisy on 2010-07-06
OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA -- In January I donated a 2006 BMW to Habitat for Humanity "Cars for home Project". Since there were so many without homes in Oakland, CA and I felt blessed to be able to help others in need in these economic times I donated the car. Once the donation was done there was a four day opening of the project recognizing donors - As a donor I was not invited but call the week after to tell me how much the donation was appreciated and the reason I was not invited was that they were unable to get in touch with me because my phone was disconnectedor they were unable to leave a message. However, I had been previously contacted by email. So, I was disappointed and outraged to be completely ignored of giving back to my own (I am African American and the community where the homes are being built is African American) and let all in charge know how disappointed I felt. The Project Director who I found out was located in San Diego, CA. had decided this wasn't the appropriate time for me to meet the community so they had another meeting with the donors and I was denied the right to that meeting as well (they met with donors during the week prior to a special set up meeting for me on June 26th (Sat) where there were only youth volunteers for the day but no community project leaders or community people working on their homes or other donors. Now, this leaves to believe either they didn't use the car as a donation and kept the car for whomever or they are racist and didn't want the people working and participating in the program to recognize an African American as a donor of a generous gift. Whatever, the reason for ignoring me as a donor wanting to make a difference in my community appears to be a racist behavior on the part of Habitat for Humanity East Bay (Oakland, CA). What kind of humanity is that?

When you truly donate something from the heart, you should never *expect* recognition from your peers. Own it.

Habit for Humanity racist? That's pretty laughable.

Not a valid complaint. You donated a car. That should be enough of a reward for you!

And yeah, as goduke said...Habitat For Humanity racist? Seriously?

I agree with that others! I also want to add that a person who labels others as "racist" simply because they have a different skin color, and didn't do things the way that person wanted things done, needs to look in the mirror to find the racist. You are juding people based on skin color. That, in my opinion, is racist.
