Spirit Airlines Complaint - Do Not Allow This Airline To Stay In Business Another Day!
MIRAMAR, FLORIDA -- I booked two tickets leaving from Reagan (DC) on July 20, 2010 to Ft. Lauderdale, FL for my wife and me to visit my Grandmother. I found out early last week that new events at work would not allow us to make our flight in time. I called immediately to find out if we could simply take a later flight. It turned out the fare difference would not have been worth it (on top of the $110 x 2 service fees). I then simply requested a credit (not a refund) for future travel with Spirit. I was then told I'd have a whopping $6 credit after my service fees of $220 were deducted. Surely, the folks at their call center in India must not have heard me correctly. I just wanted a credit because I wanted to still fly with them, but would not be able to on this day. They wouldn't budge after 5 calls over this past week (they finally let me speak to a customer service manager today). They kept stating over and over that their policy did not allow a waiver of their ridiculous (I said ridiculous, not them) service fees. I emailed my complaint to the DOT (like that'll help - well I felt a little better anyway) and I guess that's all I can do.
Meanwhile, I had a nice credit with USAirways that fit well into my wife's and my plans to go to FL.
One more thing - I got my credit up to $26 with Spirit after I went on-line to cancel. Woo Hoo, saved me a whopping $20 out of the $220 service fee.
Here's the standard reply from Spirit to my complaint (got to love the generic compassion, as I feel so much better now):

Unfortunately a non-refundable ticket was purchased and any modification of your reservation will result in a service fee and fare difference. Unfortunately I am unable to offer you a full credit of your reservation.
