GTL Global Tel Link Complaint - Unfair pricing policies

Review by K'sAngie on 2010-07-29
My husband has to prepay for calls he makes to me from East Jersey State Prison. He was informed that for the call to go through is 33cents, and every minute is an additional 33cents.
For a 15minute call the charge is $4.95 plus taxes which comes to $5.05 (he said).
Some days he will call me three or four times, and after each call he waits a minute or so to make sure he was billed correctly to his phone account.
The calls start out at $5.05, then the next one will be $5.28, then the next one will be $5.45. What's up with that???
Is this a scam they're running? How can each call be a higher price if it's supposed to be 33cents per minute?
Does anyone else have this problem with this company?
If anyone knows the answer to this puzzle, I'd surely like to know.

I suspect they are rounding up to the next minute. So if a call is 5 minues and 1 second, it's charged as 6 minutes.

GTL has a monopoly on calls to and from prison facilities, at least in my state. Goduke is correct in that they do round up calls to the nearest minute. When I utilized them to keep contact with a dear friend who was incarcerated, calls were often dropped after a couple minutes but were charged against my pre-paid acount for the full 15 minutes (which is the maximum amount of time you can talk before you are suppose to be disconnected). The company refused to credit any calls that were prematurely disconnected. Another experience I had with them is I once noticed a debit to my credit card from GTL that I did not authorize. I called customer service and they told me they would look into it and get back to me in a few days. I told them I would go ahead and begin chargeback procedures, simply because I had read so many stories about others having problems with them. The rep told me if I did so, I would be banned from using GTL's services. I, of course, did not file a chargeback because it was important to me to maintain contact with my friend (and yes, the fact they were incarcerated for criminal activity has nothing to do with GTL and their bad service). Whenever a complaint is made abut this business, inevitably someone makes the comment about criminals committing crimes, etc. To me, that is like me reading a complaint about poor service and unfair business practices at a McDonalds and posting about how unhealthy fastfood is and people shouldn't be eating it anyway. That is irrelevant. The point is, McDonalds is a business, providing a service. They should have a certain standard of customer service and engage in fair business practices. GTL is a business, providing a service, they should have a certain standard of customer service and engage in fair business practices.

I know this is beside the point and I hope you don't mind me asking Angie, but what is your husband in for? Will he be incarcerated for much longer?. Truly, I sure wish you all my best.
