The Law Office of Brett Margolin Complaint - Paying for lip service

Review by spark2plugs on 2010-07-29
LAKE GROVE, NEW YORK -- This office charged me & my wife $2500.00; for help in lowering our mortgage to a more affordable payment. This did not happen; they instead draw $1800.00 out of our bank account only to make one phone call to our lender; @ this time they found out our loan was already in modification & therefore they claim responsibility for helping when actually they did nothing. We asked repeatedly for documentation from them to the lender and all we received was inter-office correspondence. We called our lenders legal dept. and spoke w/ them and we were informed that the Law office made only one phone call to check the status of the loan. This kind of predatory business practice is not what we expected. We paid for help that we never got! This is a Law firm that committed fraud and stole money for services never rendered. WHAT THE /?

Did you give them authorization to take money out of your bank account? Did they explain exactly how they were going to help you when you hired them? That's a lot of money for some interoffice memos and one telephone call, with no results. Are they still working on it?

If you cannot resolve this issue with this lawyer, I would file a complaint against him with the New York State Bar Association.

That seems pretty shady. If its a credit card, I would call and file a dispute.

I was just preparing to send 1/2 of the $3800 requested for Brett Margolin's Law Office as the downpayment for a loan modification. I had a creepy feeling when I realized I could manipulate the emailed documents to not only fill in my info, but correct spelling errors (RED FLAG!!!) and repaginate where signature lines went off the page...HMMMM...the "legal assistant" was someone who supposedly worked with my deceased father in law's now deceased attorney years ago. He originally contacted my sister in law and she thought we could use his help..."old family friend" and all. I spoke to the assistant on the phone and because I felt he was "recommeded" from the Great Beyond, I let him send me the info. Long story short: just before faxing this guy all my financial info, including my husband's checking account info, I did some checking and not only is Brett Margolin reported to the BBB 25 times in less than 3 years, the office has an "F" rating, but the "assistant" had pleaded guilty to bank fraud and has been suspended from all procurement and nonprocurement transactions with HUD and throughout the Executive Branch of the Federal Government pending the outcome of criminal proceedings or any related debarment actions.

I guess I'll have to speak to my lender directly and see what we can work out. No one wants to foreclose on homes where there can be something worked out.

Also, I am putting a call into the NFCC for some Housing Counseling. They are a non profit credit counseling entity for over 50 years.

Good luck to all you folks who are teetering on the edge as we are and God Bless all you folks who are doing ok!

I had the same experiance. They repeatly asked for documents for 8 months then after I contacted my mortgage company they said that Brett Margolin had not contacted them since October of 2010. I had to hire another office to properly handle our mortgage issues and we recieved a loam modification and now I am complaining to anyone who will listen because The Law Offices of Brett Margolin PC are a scam and a rip-off!!!
