Alienware Informative - Poor quality - unreliable hardware
The alienware website is pretty well-designed and looks very attractive but don't fall prey to that trap.
The alienware laptop hardware is really bad. I bought my alienware m15x for $3000 in the spring of 2009 and when it arrived there was a key missing on the keyboard. After calling back alienware, sure enough they sent me a new keyboard but that took time to replace. Not to mention the trip to Fedex to return the older keyboard.
After a month later, the power button would not work and the representative on phone told me to remove the battery and ground the power button for 10 seconds and replace the battery and power it on. Sure enough that worked but I had to do this routine almost every time I power on my laptop. I called Alienware and they then asked me to send in the laptop. It came back to me repaired after a month.
Soon after...like in a couple of months the monitor hinge (made of poorest quality plastic) broke and somehow pieces of plastic and small parts started dropping off of the gap created at the hinge continuous opening and closing the laptop lid (who wouldn't do that) I had to ship my laptop back and got it back after a full 4 weeks. They had replaced the monitor and sent it back.
A year had passed and my warranty period is over now. The hinge is starting to come off again (Apparently caused by occasional opening and closing of the lid...)
I called alienware and the associate politely refused to get this repaired even if I wanted to pay money for the repair because the warranty expired. He said that m15x is out of production and all the owners of m15x are dead in the water and will have to either get them repaired somewhere else or buy a later version. Yeah right, like I'll ever buy an alienware again.
Please stand by for a video of me smashing my $3000 alienware laptop with a small hammer and post it on youtube.
Bottomline is: Alienware is not worth it at all. Buy a Sony or a Lenovo.
