Publix Informative - For retail employees....5 things customers do that aggravate me.

Review by Lovin it on 2010-08-01
So I'm doing some shopping in Publix this morning just picking up some odds and ends when I see something that really bothered me. A little kid around the age of maybe 4 or 5 was playing in the aisle and accidently knocked some merchandise off the shelf onto the floor. The kid's mother sees this, grabs the child, and leaves the aisle to continue shopping, never bothering to even consider picking the stuff up off the floor that her kid just put there. Unbelieveable. Just thought I would share, now onto my list.

5. Customer is just so important that they must do their entire register transaction while talking on their cell phone, never saying a word to the cashier. I especially hate when they take a pause from putting their items on the counter or delay paying because the phone conversation gets sticky or interesting.

4. Customer picks up an item off a shelf, looks at it, decides not to buy it, and puts it back any old place without any concern for those who have to pick up after them. Is it that difficult to put something back where you find it?

3. Customer makes a mess in the restroom. Its rude and its disgusting. Enough said.

2. Customer tries to buy cigarettes, but forgets ID. The cashier, in compliance with federal law, declines the sale, and the customer gives the cashier a hard time. People, if you look young and you want to buy cigarettes....you need to present ID, period. If you forget your ID, that is not the cashier's fault. Do not blame the help for your mistake.

1. Scum bag pays for his food order with food stamps. Right after proceeds to pay cash for a case of beer or carton of cigarettes. I will refrain from vulgarity, but thats the lowest form of retail scum I can think of. Like I would be completely embarrasssed and ashamed to do something like that. If anyone out there can rationalize doing this, please respond.

I try not to pay that much attention to other customers. Are you a Publix employee?

As to #1... You asked for rationalization. I happen to know at least one individual whom receives food stamps for a legitimate disability. This person lives off of a stipend from disability and food stamps... This person paid their taxes for years and worked as long as was possible. Why should they not be able to make adult legal choices with the little cash they actually have? People qualify for food stamps for a variety of different reasons.

I was on your side one hundred percent until I read No. 1. It's not that I don't understand your feelings, but I lean more towards SaMoore's opinion on that one.

I work in retail and there've been times when I refused to help a customer because she/he wouldn't get off the phone. we tell them to come back when they're ready. And I agree about the other stuff, too.
But I don't know about #1...if someone wants beer, and food stamps don't cover it, then what are they supposed to do? Why can't they buy beer? I don't understand what makes this person scum in your eyes.

Should it be illegal for people who qualify for food stamps to drink beer or smoke? Have your state's representatives introduce a bill to make this a law. If not, don't worry about it, they're paying cash aren't they?

That's why the USDA did away with paper food stamps...because some unscrupulous corner store owners would buy the food stamps for cash, usually 50-60 cents per dollar of food stamps. The cash was used for anything from soap and diapers to beer and cigarettes. Now, with the EBT cards, those same unscrupulous grocers are paying cash to the cardholders via the EBT terminals, and sending falsified information to the welfare/job and family services departments. And many of these corner stores do more business with alcoholic beverages and tobacco products than with food, and what little food they do carry is overpriced and possibly outdated. And there have been many such grocers who have been federally indicted for food stamp/EBT card fraud.

I'm with Venice. I agreed with everyone of the first 4 but the last one the OP is way off base. Because a person is getting assistance means they aren't entitled to have a beer?? Should they also sell their car as that is a luxury item too? Should they be allowed to have cable tv or a tv at all? Come on, because someone receives monthly help does not prohibit them from enjoying an adult beverage. I suggest the OP rethinks this.

To TheJudge.. shame shame shame.

Yeah, why should I, as a responsible tax paying citizen have to fund beer drinking, cable TV and free food - usually more expensive than I would buy on my budget.

Gov Give-aways are killing this country.
