Briggs and Stratton Complaint - Faulty Engines - Vanguard Commercial Engine

Review by K R S on 2010-08-11
I purchased a new mower in 2007, with a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard 21 HP engine. In 2008, with 160 hrs the engine dropped a valve, destroyed the engine. Received a replacement 23 HP from Briggs under warranty. Thought I would have 2 years of warranty, as stated on the website. Two months and 2 weeks after the warranty expired in 2010, this engine dropped a valve. Didn't cause major damage this time. I contacted Briggs, my claim was denied. Warranty expired, mower was used commercially, warranty was dated back to 2007 not 2008. Lots of excuses. The engine had 250 hrs on it. I do some commercial cutting, the mower is not the Pro line, but is a heavy consumer mower. The fact is it is the same mower, except the Pro has a Kohler engine. The warranty person I spoke with was not helpful, nor particularly friendly in any way. Didn't want to hear my side of the story. All he could say is warranty denied. I didn't want or expect another engine, just some help on the parts. I'll never buy another Briggs anything nor recommend them
