Bank of the West--Glendale Complaint - False Advertising - Checking Account

Review by pchiu1 on 2010-08-14
GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA -- Bank of the West Glendale does not deliver what is promised! Don't go there! Bank of the West's website & radio ads offer a free iPod Touch if a customer starts a checking account with recurring $500+ direct deposits, 10 bill-pays, or 20 debit card transactions before 10/31. However, when I went to the Glendale branch, I was told by the "financial service consultant" that they would only open a checking account for me if I also opened a savings account, and I was offered unneeded & unwanted services. When I persisted that I only wanted what was advertised, a checking account, they said I should open it on-line. I told her that I came in because I could not enter a friend's referral form on-line. I was directed to the manager, who said, "You should just go to the Apple store and buy an iPod. You don't want a relationship with our bank. You only want an iPod. A checking account is not a relationship with our bank. Our primary concern is the customers we already have. We want to keep the line short. We can't have our customers waiting just so you can open a checking account and get an iPod."

If they don't want any new customers, then why advertise for new accounts? I believe a business should stand behind its advertisements. This gave me an exceedingly poor first impression of this bank. Take your business elsewhere!

Wow, they really said that to you? I would have done exactly what he just said, and made sure I mentioned what he said to ever customer I passed by. Sounds like a bank I wouldn't want to associate with. Maybe youre lucky and found out how that bank operates before you gave them any of your money. take it as a good thing.

Wow! It's stuff like this that really gets under my skin. There are times when I wish I could wave a magic wand and have ignoramuses like this branch manager fired for their complete lack of understanding of why they have a job to begin with: 1) Customers, 2) Customers, 3) NEW Customers, 4) Customers.

If this were my dog, I would contact the three customer service groups on their website (just to let each of them know they have a rogue manager tarnishing their good name and hurting their business), plus their Chairman Michael Shepherd. But, I do go overboard sometimes....

I just read the banks website and it seems pretty clear that you get the iPod by only opening a checking account. There is nothing about opening other accounts. Try again at a different branch.

I would definitely contact the corporate office and tell them the experience you had at that bank. Someone definitely needs to be aware of what this person is doing.
