McCaig's Motel Complaint - American owned and run but disappointed.

Review by SaMoore on 2010-08-22
LINCOLN, ALABAMA -- About a week ago, returning from Charleston SC and a fantastic vacation, we decided to stop off in Lincoln AL when we saw a sign for an American run and owned motel. I am all about small business and want to support my fellow small business owners whenever I can.

So we got to the motel and went and checked out the room. A sign said $29.95 for a room and no refunds after 5 min. The rooms were clean enough, nothing fancy, so we decided to check in. So after checking the room out the manager asked if we wanted to pay for one bed or two. Apparently, all the rooms come with 2 beds but there is an extra charge if you use the second bed in any way. I thought I could live with this so we opted for one bed. The bill for 2 people and one bed came to $51 + Tax. So we checked in. I'm still not clear on how the room went from $29.95 to $51. + tax.

But you know what? We were having a nice trip and it is small business and American run... the big selling point. Then I found out why there were no refunds after 5 mins. Their hot water is set to a 3 min. timer. That's why. I am willing to go for a higher price than expected, some noise, only touching one bed, no HBO.. etc. but darn-it I really do need more than 3 min. in the shower.

So just know that what you are going to get at this American owned and run hotel is every attempt to save a buck. And while I am okay and all about cutting some costs, there is a point where you just become a cheapskate.

Thanks Dryad.

lol they actually only give you 3 minutes of hot water? Are you friggin serious? Couldnt you just turn the timer for an additional 3 minutes or it wouldnt let you? 3 minutes is DEFINITELY not enough time to get a shower! Even for the quickest person!

You don't have access to the timer. Only the front desk does and it seems all the rooms are set to 3 mins. Nice. I would have totally been fine with the room up until this point.

So no timer, which means mid-shower, you get hit with cold water? woah that could ruin my day!

Wow they sound like real cheapskates sheesh.

Exactly Prince-- freezing cold shower. Brrrr.

Ive taken cold showers before, but i dont like to take them when one isn't neeeded!

You know, charging more for the second bed was weird too. Now that I really think about it.

Yeah, you could have used it, then made it back up like it hasn't been touched :)

I'm surprised they didn't have a coin operated toilet.
Posted by Anonymous on 2010-08-22:
lol yeah wally. And charge you per pound LOL!

Coin operated toilets... you could advise the management at this place wallyworld. Just the extent this one went to really shocked me. What do you all suppose would be reasonable attempts to save expenses on at a place like this one for the owners?

Ah, hot water. That's something you wouldn't think to check, especially if you only had five minutes. Very clever. As Wally said, I'm surprised there wasn't a hidden slot for coins on the toilet, too!

Coin operated toilets...they used to have those in bus stations and public restrooms for like a nickle or dime. People would just hold the door open for the next person so they wouldn't have to pay. This is according to my Much Older Sister, of course.

Venice. I DID check the hot water. I don't know why I did it but I turned on the sink faucet and made sure there was hot water, then I turned it off. I just didn't run it long enough. Next time I will know to let it run for a few min.

I remember pay toilets, but I don't recall where they were. I do remember holding the door open for the next person though!

SaMoore... even if I checked for hot water, I would NEVER think to check or ask if it was on a timer. If you had let it run long enough, that would have taken up three of your five minutes to check the room! It sounds like a reality show. What can you find wrong with this room in five minutes?!! Go!..

That is crazy!! What was the name of the motel?

Never mind, SaMoore, I see it now.
