American Express Complaint - American Express Costco Insanity
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- On or about July 9, 2010, I started a Costco membership and was convinced by the Costco employee to open an American Express card - no fee + rebates. Perhaps two weeks later, I received the American Express card in the mail. I used it for about a dozen purchases in the next three or so weeks. On August 28, my card was rejected at a gas station. The account was approximately 6 weeks old and I'd had the card in-hand for perhaps 4 weeks. The next morning while teaching students I received a call from American Express requesting that I provide checking info so they could get paid. I pointed out that I had yet to receive a statement of any sort, and that this was a new card. I was told there was a $15 late fee they would waive (how kind) if I paid immediately. I was also told that my credit record wouldn't be damaged because these things aren't reported for a long time afterward. I didn't have a checkbook with me, so I promised to pay after work.
When I arrived home, my first bill was there, dated August 24 (five days ago). I paid the bill using BilPay. I called two days later to make sure everything was clear on my account and that there would be no mark on my credit history (I'm at 840). I was furious to find out that AmEx had no control over the automatic report to credit data services. I cancelled the card. The AmEx employee told me that since I have such a good credit score, I should've known to use the contacts on the back of the card to make my first payment!
From my perspective, I had the card from at-best July 9 to August 9 as the first billing cycle. From August 9, I was expecting to see a bill. Less than 3 weeks later, I'm getting collection calls.
