3 Door Amana Refrigerator model AFI2538AES - Complaint
Review by prb238 on 2010-09-10
I bought this refrigerator a little over 3 years ago. It is a nice looking unit and I love the bottom freezer feature. Yesterday the freezer started not cooling and then of course the fridge did as well. I did not buy an extended warranty so I expected to pay for a repair. The service guy comes out and his diagnosis is "unrepairable"!!!! I spent $2,100 on this appliance and after 3 years it is unrepairable? Here is the description of the problem from the repair tech, "refrigerator non-repairable, compressor discharge tube leak and sucked compressor oil into lines, cap tube plugged." His assessment was that you could replace the compressor but with the cap tube plugged (which apparently is not able to be replaced) it will fail again quickly or just not work at all.

Needless to say I am not pleased at all. This will be my last Whirlpool/Amana purchase that I ever make. Why would you make a product that is unrepairable?

I think I would call Amana Relations and relay this to them. Maybe they will offer something off a new one, although I doubt it would be enough to remove the sour taste left from this purchase. What may also happen though, is a tech may have a second opinion on just how unrepairable the unit really is.

It could be worse. They could have charged you for fixing the refrigerator knowing it would fail again. At least the tech was truthful. However, I am in no way condoning the need to throw away an appliance after only three years of use. That's inexcusable on the part of Whirlpool/Amana.

I actually really like Amana products and, myself, own an Amana French door refrigerator. I've had mine for several years and would highly recommend it to anyone so, if Amana did make you an offer to help cover even a portion of the cost of a new one, I would greatly consider it.

Occasionally products are really not serviceable, at least at affordable costs. An extended service guarantee would have generally covered the cost you're about to incur in replacing your fridge.

I also just found out the same thing happened to my 5 year old $1800.00 Amana bottom freezer refrigerator with the discharge tube. I had an extended warranty and they do not cover a "corroded discharge tube" that failed and took out the other components. Also, Amana will not do anything for me toward a new appliance. I called and made a verbal complaint and will also be writing a formal complaint and hope you do also. It seems this is a problem and they do not want to recall their inferior product.

I too have had an Amana refrigerator for 3 years. In early June it stopped cooling. I called Amana and they told me they had a warranty that I could buy that covered parts/labor/ and gave me an extra year of coverage. It was run through Assurant, the company that handles the warranties. They in turn scheduled a repair with Dan Marc Appliance. This is a company that you should run, quickly, from because they are horrible. After about a month of them kicking me around and not repairing my fridge even though they put on their invoice that they replaced 4 parts, not true, I cancelled my contract. (I am still trying to get my money back from Assurant) I then went with another repair company that was local to me. They have come out 3 times now to try and repair my fridge ($800 later). Each time something new happened and the coolant system gave out again. The last time they came out they diagnosed a leak in the coolant system that they told me is unrepairable because it is in a part of the fridge that is sealed and to get to it they would have to break open the back of the appliance. So, I call Amana thinking "Surely they'll do something for me as the fridge is 3 YEARS OLD" Nope, it's out of warranty and they will do nothing for me. How's that for customer service!? I will NEVER buy Amana again for that reason. The appliance is obviously a lemon and was built with faulty parts. How does it spring a leak in a sealed part of the fridge? Amana will do nothing for me, not a dime. DO NOT BUY AMANA PRODUCTS, they do not support their crappy manufacturing. I would have been happy with some money back towards the purchase of another fridge, if they couldn't refund me the complete cost. They weren't pretty adamant that it was out of warranty so tough cookies for me. Guess I'm going fridge shopping....
