Ethiopian Airlines Complaint - Ethiopian Airlines- just don't fly

Facts: Flight ET 0704 scheduled to take off at 23:55 (September 9, 2010). After boarding the plane, passengers are asked to get their belongings and disembark at 00:05. Explanation: 'due to the mechanical issues the flight is delayed'. Possible departure in 2 hours. At 02:30 updated possible departure time now is 06:00. At 06:00 announcer asks the passengers to proceed to the gate (now the departure time is established for 08:00). As soon as the line forms by the gate, the airline representatives hoard everybody to the cafeteria 'for breakfast' while quietly postponing flight time to 09:30. Cafeteria is empty. Personnel arrives in a half hour, and starts slowly doing something...
Plane takes-off at 09:45 on September 10, 2010. Needless to say, my connection in Brussels is missed, the round trip ticket with Brussels Airlines BRU-VNO on Sep10, and VNO-BRU on Sep12 is canceled without refund (although on-line check-in was done but since the passenger missed the flight- doesn't matter the reason- he is considered a criminal profiting from lower round-trip ticket price). Had to pay $750 to fly BRU to WAW, and my relatives drove 7 hours to pick me up. Since my ticket was canceled, I wasn't on the passenger list to fly from VNO to BRU (357EUR gone), and forced to buy $575 ticket to the same flight I had a ticket.
Think about flying Ethiopian and Brussels airlines!

There is always a risk passengers face when purchasing separate tickets that the first flight will be delayed. You can save lots of money, but bad weather or a mechanical means you are out hundreds.

Next time, add in an overnight in your connection city - if you are saving a lot by purchasing separate tickets a cheap hotel should be worth it. Also, check out the total price to buy a ticket all the way to your final destination. If your Brussels flight was part of your Ethiopian ticket, you would have been rebooked for free.

Unfortunately, delays will happen on every airline. This is nothing that is exclusive to Ethiopian Airlines.

Ben, that's some good advice. When United canceled for a mechanical, they put us up in a hotel and gave us meal vouchers. There were so many passengers, they actually added a new flight the next morning to get us on our way. Then they emailed me a voucher for $100 off my next flight.

Some extra details: There was no possibility to purchase ticket from ADD to VNO. Even the travel agency couldn't do it (via BRU, Paris, Stockholm, or other). I had a hotel room in Addis just wasn't allowed to go there. And the travel for the weekend to see my family was spoiled. Ethiopian proposal for next flight to VNO would have meant me going there, saying Hi! at the airport, and boarding the plane back. They (Ethiopian while rebooking)don't consider all the possible options, that's why I chose the other route, and have spent 28 hours with my family (planned 2 days) instead of 2 minutes (proposed by ET).
