Enterprise Rent-A-Car Informative - Warning - Rental process and car selection/ Unlawful practices
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA -- I am a ex-employee who would like to share some of my experiences while working at Columbia, SouthCarolina airport. The whole basis of this article is to let you know the service you receive is based on the staffs desire to make a commission check. I have experienced renting cars whose hard tags have not arrived, this means the cars we rented were not legal to put on the road, this was done intentionally by changing the date on the temp tag. We have rented cars that have cracked windshields. The cars had had pulled for repair but when where not available, the manager used them. The cars being reserved to go one way is another story. You will be getting the highest mile cars and a lot will have body damage. We where told to ship them out. The other rental stations would have to deal with the cost of having a non rental car on their books. We would up sell a customer to a bigger car charging a minimum of eleven dollars more a day, even when we didn't have the smaller car in stock that they had reserved. If the customer insisted they wanted the cheaper rental it all of a sudden was a free upgrade today for the bigger one. Most people do need the coverage we sold. The rental agents typical hourly rate is about 8.50 hr. We were paid commission on insurance coverage, gps rental, gas and upgraded cars. I made more on commission than hourly pay so you see my motivation to be an aggressive sales person. The top sales persons get advanced. The management as well must push the workers at the counter to receive their bonuses. My manager was fired after I was. I decided not to take the verbal abuse and unethical practices. When I told his bosses what was going on, one said to the other that I told him to quit doing that. I believe he was let go because they know I am dedicated to letting out the secrets that I know and to cover themselves. I was let go on July 2 2010. The rental business is very competitive but do you trust the car that you may get. Did the low paid agent give you the worst in the fleet because you didn't buy anything extra. That is the way it works. Putting the customer in the smallest vehicle if they are big and they will be back in to upgrade to a bigger car. If you don't rent from them than your complaint will not make it to anyone. You are not a customer that can be tracked so you do not exsist. This is the beginning of a campaign to save people money on rentals and to make the car rental companies pay for good service people, not the customers by paying for the extras.
