Whirlpool - Minor feature is major flaw
Microwave over the stove
Customers should be aware before they purchase this item their warranty is voided if they so much as try to change the light bulb themselves....It must be done by a Whirlpool repair technician. I don't know where this is in writing, but it should be posted on the units in big red letters in the store.
I thought the difficulty getting to the little screw in bulb was a design flaw, but they actually make it awkward (but not impossible to reach)because they require you to call a repairman (85.00 in my area)to replace the bulb.
In my case the bulb was damaged either in manufacture, shipping or installation....When I called today to inquire about the replacement bulb they voided my warranty...Which would probably not been covered, anyway... If I had called first... I was told it would probably have been considered routine upkeep.
...And... because the bulb is broken, I also cannot plug my unit back in either...It was loose from it's base which is still in the socket.
The one repairman I called said I could get the bulb for about 15 bucks at Lowes or Sears. If I used the unit as it is, it might be okay, or it it might blow a fuse in the unit which would require a much more extensive repair as the unit would have to be uninstalled and reinstalled.
This seems to me a totally ridiculous feature. It is saying the average consumer is not smart enough to change a lightbulb any more.
If that is what Whirlpool thinks of me I will not purchase any more of their products...and now I am in the market for three instead of just the two I was this morning..
