Kostka Auto Repair Complaint - Rip-off artists - Auto Repair

Review by the_dude on 2010-10-05
HIGHLANDS -- Had to have my car towed in. Charged me $80-plus dollars just for a diagnostic. Attempted to railroad me with fees, that no other shop in the area said they would charge. Threatened me when I attempted to negotiate a more reasonable price.

If you knew that every other shop in the area, did not charge for a diagnostics test, why did you have your vehicle towed to Kostka Auto Repair? I'm not sure how they railroaded you, you could have refused their diagnostic service, and just paid for the tow. And then pay for another two to one of the many places you know of, that do not charge for diagnostic testing.

Diagnostic fees are almost standard practice in the auto repair industry. While some shops will waive the fee if you allow them to do the repair, I would bet it is in their price structure somewhere.

Even looking at the car, with no repair or diagnostic would likely have generated a labor charge. Most shops have "service books" telling them how long a repair should take and charge accordingly. If installing a part only takes them 1 hour due to experience and the book estimates 2 hours many will charge you for two.

Labor is billed in tenths. So 1.0 equals 1 hour. 1.5 equals an hour and a half.

Labor rates range from $60 to $100 per hour at local repair shops and $80 to $140 per hour at the dealer level. Labor times are based on established industry guidelines, which are frequently abused.
