All phone services that take charge of the prison phones - Complaint
These phone companies that allow and inmate to call home are all as greedy as our federal government. They charge you boo coo bucks just to hear you son, husban, wife, daughter or friends voice. Sure, they are in prison for a reason but we, their families are the ones that continue paying and paying for these rediculos phone call minutes. And there is no where that we can complain about any of these services!!!! I tried the better business to check up on one of the ones I was going to sign up for but could not find anything. Does anyone out there know of any place in the internet world that families can complain about certain prisons and the the phone services that are in charge of all out going calls? Please let me know. If I knew how to set up a complaint website about prison phoning I would. Can someone help?

A portion of the money these companies makes goes right back to the prisons.
This means as a taxpayer, I have to pay less to feed, cloth and house these people.
I am all for them charging as much as possible.

It's my understanding amaynez the higher prices are charged because a paid human has to listen in. It appears to be much as mail from the postal service to an inmate is read beforehand. I might be wrong here so someone please correct me. I was sore for a number of years because of a burglary in my home. I wanted to string that person up. I didn't care about the person or his family. I just wanted my possessions back.
There was a break in next door to my home the first of the week. The guy didn't flip on his security system when he left for about an hour. Someone kicked in the front door and grabbed whatever was available at first glace. He wouldn't have a whole lot of sympathy for anyone at this point.
I hope you can work it out with communication with your family member.

The consumers paying for the service have committed NO CRIME. They are not entitled to recourse because they are calling a prison?

You can file a complaint about the prison through the office of the Inspector General.

Amaynez, I would actually contact my State Senator or other state representative to discuss this. You can find yours online, likely with contact info.
Complaining online is fine, and when it comes to some companies, it makes a difference, but to impact the relationship between a private business and a government-run entity like a prison - I think you need to talk to someone who represents you in the government.

Sounds to me as if this company is not doing anything fraudulent or illegal. So, I don't see where complaining to the Better Business Bureau or any consumer agency is pertinent.
If they are charging a lot for phone calls, I'd be curious to know what the justification is. There might be some good reasons for it, such as the one Nohandle mentioned.
LinusOno has the right idea. This is a practice that is sanctioned by the government and you have representatives in the government who should, at least, hear you out. You didn't say whether it's a federal, state, county prison, or what. But maybe whatever agency operates the prison might would have some kind of public communications office, too.

The phone companies in these facilities split the money with the facility and therefore others turn a blind eye, now the state doesn't have to help with any funds.
