HSN Informative - HSN Lying About Retail Values - fashion items

fashion items
Review by Boopy on 2010-10-16
I'm a fashion nut and think I know something about quality (or lack of it) items. I have bought some of HSN's fashion products and most of what I bought was so poor that they were only worth the clearance price. Yet, HSN almost always has a retail value comparison which they mark way up. For example, I bought a simple cotton big shirt that had a regular HSN price of $36.90 at the clearance price $10, but the website said the retail value is $68.00. Now, the quality of the garment was what one could get at JCPenney or even KMart. Besides being dishonest with their so-called "retail price" (which would be the price they claim you'd find the same/similar garment in other stores), the hosts often talk with over-exuberance and often compare their low-quality fashions with the higher prices of very expensive designers/fashions (An HSN price of a $100 garment might be compared unfairly to hundreds of dollars you would pay, for example, at a store on Rodeo Drive or some fancy boutique, which is a ridiculous comparison, since HSN quality is like WalMart, maybe even worse.) There are lots of 1-star or 2-star customer reviews on their fashion items, but I'm sure HSN doesn't care, since they have a high volume of viewers and potential suckers. I'm sure even customers who have given them bad reviews of their products continue to shop there because they have a nice website and are entertaining and alluring.

It seems that if you are a fashion nut and know something about quality, you probably prefer your fashionable clothing and accessories to meet a certain standard. That standard being above what HSN provides.

As far as a pool of potential suckers, this is the same way that I view Dell Computer Corporation.

If HSN has customers who are happy with the merchandise and prices, then why would you try to convince them otherwise? The hosts are salespeople. Most people know that and make their choices accordingly. I never take the suggested retail price into consideration anywhere I shop. I only pay what I think something is worth to me. If you are unhappy with what HSN has to offer, then by all means go to Kmart or Walmart, or anywhere else that makes you feel like you're getting your money's worth.

Keep in mind that some people use these shopping channels because they do not have access to stores. They are also willing to pay for the convenience of not having to leave the comfort of their homes or having to wait on lines, etc. Everything comes with a price.

"Retail value" is relavent as opposed to actual value of an item. Manufacturers will suggest a retail price to a retail store but the owner of the store makes the decision as to the selling price.
