Super 8 Motel - St. Ignace, MI Complaint - Asked To Clean Toilets - Super 8 Motel, St. Ignace, MI - Lodging

Lodging - Complaint
Review by seanmaji on 2010-10-18
ST. IGNACE, MICHIGAN -- We stayed at the Super 8 Motel in St. Ignace, MI on Sept 4 & 5, 2010 (Labor day weekend).

The toilet got clogged and we notified the front desk in the morning of Sept 5, 2010 before we left for the day. Upon our return in the evening, the toilet was still not fixed. I went to the front desk and instead of an apology for the delay, the lady handed me a plunger to go fix it myself. I told her I would rather not do it myself. I mentioned that I had notified them in the morning and that I am not willing to fix toilets during my vacation. Her answer was "Geez, I will do it for you". Having paid a little over $300 for two nights, I expected much better service.

I complained to Wyndham Worldwide, the parent company of Super 8 on September 9, 2010 and received a response same day. I was told that the General Manager of the property will contact me by 9/15 to resolve the issues and that she will personally follow up. After not hearing back within the promised date, I contacted Wyndham on 9/22. This time I was told that the General Manager contacted Wyndham on 9/13 but I was not copied on it. She apologized and would send a voucher of $100 for the inconvenience I experienced at the property. After not receiving anything in the mail, I followed up with an email to the CS lady from Wyndham on 10/4 inquiring about when I could expect the $100 voucher. I received no response and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Sounds like Wyndham's trying to resolve this, but not the franchise owner of the Super 8. Let us know what Wyndham does and if this gets resolved.

LOL, are you kidding? I work in a hotel and if I told a guest to unclog their own toilet, I would be out on my rear faster than you can say Boo! That's ridiculous.

It is a Super 8 MOTEL not the Ritz for christs sake...You clogged it you unclog it

Imagine having to unclog some strangers toilet for them...Turds floating around...Gnarly

Ummm...I personally would have at least tried the plunger, but the OP didnt feel confortable, so someone should have done it for them. It doesnt matter how much the guest paid for the room, if they dont feel comfortable, someone should have went there and fixed it. I can see it now. They OP would have used the plunger and damaged the toilet somehow, and you all would have been blaming them for breaking the toilet.

norcal, why should a customer have to unclogg the toilet. How do they know that the person before them did not clog it. If you were to clog the toilet at a resturant would you expect to have to unclogg it. That is what the employees are getting paid for.

At a cheap motel I wouldn't expect someone to unclog a toilet that I clogged.I am able to clean up after myself thank you..

At $150 a night I would not call that cheap and I would expect them to unclogg my toilet. Nor, you have no proof if it was the OP's family that clogged the toilet, it could have been a problem for other guests.

Hey NorCalSteve, did you ever see Slumdog Millionaire?

I'd be inclined to agree with NorCalSteve but this Super 8 is not charging a Super 8 rate. What's the story on that? Was there some kind of event going on that weekend that had the motels jacking up their rates? (It happens.)

So, I gotta go with yoke on this one. I hope you get your hundred bucks. That sounds pretty fair.

$150 a night is a little too high, especially when its Fall season and the rate should be lower.

YUCK! As someone said, it's Super 8 not the Ritz. If you clog a toilet with your own feces, why should YOU not be the one to plunge it out?

This is crappy customer service. Wyndham stepped up to help, but didn't follow through with the resolution.

While I personally would have attempted the "clean-up," the issue at this point is you were promised something that wasn't delivered.

I work at a mid-priced hotel. I am the only one here from 3-11. I have to hand out the plunger, because I can not leave the desk.
Posted by Venice09 on 2010-10-19:
Dvschase, you are the only person at the hotel from 3-11? Is that AM or PM? There are no maintenance workers or housekeeping staff on call during those hours? What if something more serious than a clogged toilet happens?
Posted by dvschase on 2010-10-19:
3-11pm. No one is really on call. The front desk does it all. If it is a very serious problem I can call the owner. If it is something that can be fixed by moving a guest to another room, then maintenance and housekeeping wait until the morning. It is like that at almost all hotels in my area.

Anyone watch Undercover Boss? CHOICE hotels does the same thing. The night person does EVERYTHING, from front desk to maintenance,to requests for pillows, etc, at a lot of their properties

Venice, I worked front desk at a motel alone from 10pm until 6am, no other staff was on shift, had a few scary experiences. Not long after I quit there, they found a woman's head in a trunk in the parking lot, left there by a motel guest. Shadow Motel, near Seatac airport.

The OP says s/he asked to have the toilet dealt with during the day, while they were out. This would be while the normal housekeeping and maintenance people would have been on hand.

Something nobody has mentioned is the possibility that there is some problem with the plumbing that caused the toilet to clog up easily. While it does sound as if this occurred while the guests were in the room, it is still quite possible that they did nothing irresponsible to cause it.
Posted by Venice09 on 2010-10-19:
Ript, I was thinking it wouldn't be safe, but nothing like that!

I don't understand how the night person can do everything if they're not supposed to leave the desk. There probably isn't too much to do overnight, but 3PM is pretty early.

I agree with getoverit that this should have been taken care of during the day. I don't really think it matters who or what caused the problem, hotel guests should not have to plunge toilets.
Posted by yoke on 2010-10-20:
Agree with getoverit, since this was asked to be done by the guest when they left for the day there is NO reason why it could not be taken care of by housekeeping (sounds like they did not go into the room to clean). It's not as if this was the first time the front desk was aware of the situation. It is possible that this is an ongoing issue in the room, why should a paying guest have to unclog the toilet.
