DirecTV Inc Complaint - Replacing Your Receiver Or Upgrading From Standard To HD = Automatic 2-Year Contract Extension
I spent half an hour going back and forth with a service representative to have DirecTV waive a $160 cancellation fee for a contract that I didn't even know I renewed. In 2009, DirecTV sent me a letter saying that a receiver upgrade was mandatory if I wanted to keep all of the channels I had when I first opened my account. The letter didn't mention that this upgrade would mean an automatic 2-year contract extension. That was NEVER mentioned nor explained by any of the phone reps nor the technician. Apparently, my signature on the service invoice was proof that I extended the contract.
These phantom contracts are total rip off!!! If your receiver breaks, don't get a new one (even if you have the protection plan) unless you intend on keeping your account open for two more years. And if you want to upgrade your receiver types, that's also an automatic contract extension. DirecTV NEVER discloses this up front.. Beware!!!
