Avis Complaint - Robbery attempt - car rental
FARO -- I am a Dutch national and rented an AVIS vehicle in Faro, Portugal.
After driving the car (VW Golf) for less than 350K the clutch remains in depressed position and does not come up again. I am unable to change gears. I stop and call for replacement vehicle. Upon returning this vehicle to Avis at the end of rental period they try to let me sign a form. I ask what kind of form. It's a permission to charge my credit card for € 1500,- By not disclosing the purpose of this form this amounts to a robbery attempt. I don't sign.
Upon returning home I find out they charged my c. c. for € 1500,- anyway!!
They sent me a (fabricated) report from their VW dealer stating that I ruined the clutch by continuing to drive while the burning clutch emitted smoke and fire. This was just to justify their stealing € 1500,- from me.
This is blatant lie. There was no smoke and fire. I was in car with 3 adults and a child of 3 years old. Can you imagine me continue driving with smoke, fire and a 3-year old in the car???
The Avis Faro, Portugal office is to be avoided at all times. It's a bunch of thieves and liars!
