AAA Complaint - Watch your Credit Card!
COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA -- I've had AAA on and off since 1984 when I got a loan from them to buy a car. I have also had insurance with them on and off for many years--no longer.
Something has radically changed about this company. I let my membership lapse for about 2 months while I moved from OR to CA--a very chaotic endeavoer. When I went to renew my membership--they would not honor my years of prior membership. They charged me a "new member" fee of $50+/-. That annoyed me. Also, to get towing of over 7 miles for free, I had to pay another $49 fee. My total membership fee for my husband and I and PLUS service was $122. This entire year I have been getting marketing letters with great introductory offers. Better than what I paid. When I called them to get one of these, they denied it. Then, I told them they might want to act like they knew I was a member, but I continued to get letters at least once a month until now.
This year I got a renewal statement at the END of October. My card did not expire until 11/17. Today, 11/8, I noticed that there was an "autopay" clause on the renewal and I immediately phoned them to dispute that. I NEVER autopay anything. They told me my card had been charged on 11/3! I was furious because I was not even going to renew. I never use them and I feel they are too expensive for what they offer. They don't care one iota about my membership and you can get maps from Mapquest or BarnesandNoble.com if you need them. At first I was told they would not reverse the fee, then when I told them my next step of charge disputing, they agreed to credit my card in 10-15 days. I asked to speak to someone else. She told me they would reverse the charge. There was no attempt made to appease me as a customer, or keep my membership!?!? That is really unbelievable to me in this economy. I was already pretty upset with them, but what a way to end an almost 30 year relationship.
If you have a membership with them, be careful that they will not automatically charge your card!
