Dancing With The Stars Complaint - Name Change

Complaint
Review by abl on 2010-11-17
If this show is going to continue to be more popularity than dancing ability, then change the name of the show to reflect this !! The name of the show "Dancing With the Stars" suggests that dancing is the skill needed to compete in this competition. If this show is really just a popularity competition, then change the name to "Popularity of the Stars". The competitors enter this contest expecting to be fairly judged on the dancing ability by both the judges and the viewers !!! This has not been happening ! Popularity is ruling. It's time to get back to the basics. Let's Dance !! If not, you'll lose viewers !!!!!

The funny thing is, I had no idea Bristol Palin or her mother were that popular.

They are very popular on the trailer park circuit...

The same can be said for any show where the public votes. American Idol does not find the best singer, necessarily. It finds the singer that America relates to best or finds the most likable.

So You Think You Can Dance is famous for saying that they're searching for America's FAVORITE (not best) dancer. You can't tell people how to decide how to vote. It's just the nature of the medium.

And the Palins are VERY popular in some circles, and it's not just the trailer park.

I think DWTS should be based more on talent though. There's more room for error in singing. Dancing has to be more precise.

I had to laugh at the commercial for the new Skating With The Stars; when they list the 'stars' they have to tell you who each of them is, because no one would recognize them otherwise. Some stars!

What's especially funny is that they had "Skating with Celebrities" on another channel probably about 6 or 7 years ago.

Obs, that's because no recognizable star would likely be caught dead doing a show like that I'd bet.

funny how it's ok for a talentless mass like Ruben Studdard or that fantasia chick can win american idol based on popularity but a white single mother can't make the finals on DWTS

Inat: So you are an expert on talent and race relations?

I bet you think that Vanilla Ice was the bomb, huh?
Posted by Inat on 2010-11-17:
no. i thought he stunk.

It's a popularity contest not a true talent show you know?

We all know the popularity that William Hung got from just auditioning on Idol.

well, when "the people" vote on popularity rather than skill, you don't always get the "best" person - look at the guy in the white house, for example!

Sorry, Inat, but I disagree. Studdard and Fantasia are both extremely talented. Not my style, but that doesn't mean I don't recognize their talent.

Just curious. How did you feel about Adam Lambert, who came so close to winning?

I just feel that this is what happens on public voting reality shows. You don't have the professionals making the cut, it's the public. So yes, it IS based on popularity.
