GFA Brands Inc. Informative - Food Safety - Smart Balance Buttery Spread

Review by Gin on 2005-03-20
ARIZONA -- I was making a very large quantity of stuffing and decided to use Smart Balance Buttery Spread instead of the usual butter or margarine to sautee the celery and onion prior to adding them to the bread cubes. I placed one pound of the solid spread in a large frying pan over medium heat to let it melt slowly while I chopped the vegetables. After the entire container had melted and before I had added any of the vegetables the melted spread literally exploded and flew several feet from the stove in all directions. Fortunately no one was standing close to the stove when this happened. After cleaning up the mess I poured the liquid that remained in the pan back into the original container and only about one fourth of it had not flown out of the pan. I reported this to GFA Brands in an effort to have them place instructions on the label that when melting large quantities of Smart Balance to sautee anything that the food should be placed in the pan as soon as the spread starts to melt to prevent separation of the oil and liquid and subsequent explosion of the product. Both individuals I spoke with seemed to question the event and stated that they had never heard of this happening in their test kitchens or to any consumers. Nevertheless, it happened to me and since the company has not yet made any notation or warning on the label, I decided to post the information on your website.
