Pepboys/Phx, Az Mcdowell Complaint - Non Repair Charges - Service/Diagnostic

Review by McDOWELLCOMPLAINTS on 2010-12-12
PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- Car was in for tune up $269.P/b called; "your car's ready", still ran the same. 2 Days later $249, p/b;"cars ready". Still ran the same. "Solution was vacume line reconnected", now runs right. Overcharged $568 for tune not needed. $89.95 Diagnostic on 1991 Lexus 250. Could not perform. Pepboys
equiptment does not go back to 1991 for diagnostic, I was still charged.

No results for the diagnostic, because "it was not done". We have been charged $89.95 4 Times over 2 years before we found they can not perform diagnostic test on a 1991 car.

Last time it was for 'emmisions failed test'. Charged again $89.95 + $165."Still did not pass on retest".Took car back 4 times & failed test 5 times. Emmions inspector wrote on my slip; "egr valve not working properly".( Did not say; replace valve without testing) p/b replaced valve, no test before & no test after replacing. I was told "we don't test " !!! Inspector says; "no vacume ic going thru the egr vale" 4th time failing; returned to p/b."They test all of a sudden".P/b "you need a modulator on the valve $249".If they tested 1st, it would be found>modulator needed, not the valve it self. Now they tell me that I said; "replace egr valve, don't test it before or after" !!!I spke to service manager, "if you (71yr old total disabled) go get the part, pay for it, bring it back, we'll take 10% off instalation. Email & spoke to p/b customer relations 4 times. Each time complint is going up tothe next level. Last call; "it's going to area supervisor". Over a month ago, no reuslts.
"Pepboys mechanics is a joke". They bogus charge you, over charge you. They do nothing to correct situation. They just "guess works wrong with car". Can not do diagnostic my car have been charged 4 times. Called 3 Pepboys locations in phoenix & 2 in Los Angeles. All said;"we can not do diagnostic on 1991, too old for our equiptment". Main office/Pepboys headquarters was told what I found out. Still nothing made right. Car still will not pass. $$165 Spent, also p/b supposely did $400 make up.
(Put the wrong part on, no test before or after) was told "we don't test"
now filing with 'Arizona attorney generals office'. Also with 'bbb" bureau

Is "Pep Boys" really "that bad"?

I've never "taken my car" to one before. I mean I've "read" about them here but ... "how" bad are they?

They are pretty bad. I took a car there once for an oil change and they tried to pressure me into the whole tune up/transmission flush that was done 3000 miles before.
