Steak n Shake Complaint - Not Worth the Wait Or Money - Burgers

Burgers - Complaint
Review by Jmitchem on 2010-12-14
PIKEVILLE, KENTUCKY -- My town of Pikeville, KY just recently got a Steak N Shake. We drove by it constantly with it completely packed - drive through always full, thinking wow people really love it! WRONG Drive thru took my wife and I about 45 minutes to get through (thats why its always full) The burgers aren't anything special paying almost $3 for a burger you can get at Burger King, Wendys, Mcdonalds for less than half that price.

Save your money eat elsewhere.

You sound about as impressed as I did when I first tried In & Out burger. I'm not quiet sure what all the fuss was about.

It's popular for some reason. Steak and Shake and In & Out burgers are great.

Howard, I agree. In and Out and Krispy Kreme both. I have tried both several times and fail to understand what all the hullaballoo is all about. Give me Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts any day. I was born and raised in Indianapolis, and miss White Castle and Steak and Shake. S&S had the best chili I have found anywhere.

Starlord: I tried Krispy Kreme and didn't care for it at all. It was greasy in an odd way. The only White Castle I've ever seen is in the movie with Harold and Kumar.

I have also tried both nothing to write home about.

Ahhh, you haven't lived. I grew up in NJ, and there was a White Castle on Bloomfield Ave out East past Fairfield. Quite a road trip (not like H & K's though) but (not) worth it. It was only good when we were drunk. Hmm, drinking, driving. It was the 70's...

Well, I've never heard of Steak and Shake. They must not be in the NW--at least where I live. We do have a local place called Burgerville. They are only located in SW WA and Portland OR. Great fast food, but a little pricier than most because they use local products. Definitely worth it!

LOL @ trmn8r! I also experienced a road trip for some White Castle. That didn't exist any more. I wasn't that disappointed. Maybe it's because I don't drink..

I grew up with White Castle in New Jersey at Nungessers (if anyone's familiar). It was the ("Happy Days") Arnold's of the area. Carhops, loud music, drag racing, etc. I haven't had a WC burger in decades, but I sure would love some right now!

Venice -> The memory might taste better than the real thing. I can taste my mom's roast beef right now. Beef roasts were of a higher quality decades ago. WC sliders? I'm not so sure.

Where is that in Jersey?

I have a feeling I would still like them. I'm tempted to try the frozen ones, but I think THAT would spoil the memory. They have to be eaten right off the grill and out of the bag. Oh, and let's not forget the smell. You could be blind and know you were approaching White Castle.

Trmn8r, I know the White Castle you're talking about! It's an Acura dealership now. :)

I had White Castle a few months ago for the first time in about 10 years. It was yummy!

Trmn, funny you should ask about the location. I was just trying to explain Nungessers to my husband who had never heard that name before despite having lived in the area.

Here's some info:

Near Guttenberg and W New York? My college roommate was from there - I went to school in Hoboken.

Funny, now that I think of it, the last WC I went to 3-4 yrs ago was in this general area, but not this one.

"let's not forget the smell. You could be blind and know you were approaching White Castle." Now you have me speechless.

Trmn, I didn't know you were familiar with that area. My husband went to school in Weehawken. I lived in Bergen County, but Hudson County was a big part of my life. The park, shopping, movies. My family did most of the shopping on Bergenline Ave. in West New York. It was beautiful at Christmastime. I really miss the feeling of going from store to store in the snow. On the other hand, I do love the comfort of indoor malls. I didn't know there was another White Castle in that area. I always thought Nungessers was the only one.

I just checked. There's one in Union City. Maybe that's the one you went to.
