Valspar Guardsman Furniture Protection Plan Complaint - Guardsman Protection Plan Does not Honor Warranty
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN -- In 2005, I purchased a sofa and chair from a small furniture store. The salesman presented the Valspar Guardsman Protection Plan to me for an additional cost. The warranty was to protect my furniture against accidental stains, rips in fabric, etc. for 10 years. I purchased the warranty. I was given an itemized credit card receipt that showed I purchased a "Lane 2 pc recline" and "Guardman 10y + Protection Plan".
Last month, a guest tore the cushion of the sofa with keys in his pocket. As per the directions, I called the company and they mailed me the claim form. I submitted the completed claim form and the itemized receipt, which is the only receipt I was ever given, and since it was itemized I never questioned it. I also supplied Valspar with the serial numbers that were still on the label on the bottom of the sofa.
Valspar (Guardman) refuses to honor the warranty because they say my receipt does not prove that the damaged sofa is the sofa that the warranty was purchased for. They are requiring additional proof of sale including a serial number. The furniture store is no longer in business and I have no way of getting this information.
Valspar should not hold the consumer responsible for the actions of their merchants. As a consumer, there is no reasonable way for me to know what needs to be printed on this receipt. The pamphlet that I was given states "original sales receipt and protection plan number". This was supplied to them.
Valspar will look for any reason to deny claims against this warranty. I believe this to be a scam and feel victimized by this bad business practice. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and hope that Valspar fulfills their obligation.
