When Cingular and AT&T Wireless merged late last year to form the nation's largest cell phone company, they also brought together two companies that get the most complaints from wireless customers.
The Consumer Union -- which publishes Consumer Reports magazine and HearUsNow.org -- studied Federal Communications Commission records and found that the combined company had more complaints per million customer than any other.
AT&T also had the worst record for 2003.
The FCC received nearly 30,000 complaints about wireless service in 2004, up from 21,000 in 2003.
Consumers Union looked at the top eight carriers. Combined, Cingular and had 289 per million customers. Of the national wireless companies, Verizon had the fewest complaints per million, at 76.
Regional carrier US Cellular has the lowest number of complaints per million subscribers, at 39.
Most of the complaints were about billing problems, followed by problems with transferring phone numbers, service quality, contracts and marketing.
