HomeAway Complaint - HomeAway is abusing their monopoly

Review by electronicwarrior on 2011-01-06
HomeAway has purchased all of the significant online listing sites for owner managed vacation rentals. As soon as they completed this process they both increased their charges dramatically (like doubled) AND started adding a plethora of fees and extra charges which, if you don't pay, insures that your property languishes at the bottom of their list. The value of their service has decreased as this has occurred as measured in revenue generation to the property owner.

To top it off, VRBO for example, actually advertises competing properties when a client is trying to inquire about your property!!!

At this time the only solution I can think of is to move to using your own website and advertising to avoid the HomeAway monopoly. I urge property owners to start refusing to list with any HomeAway site until they start to change

I just read their terms of service. Reading sections 25 and 27 should keep any person with the ability to understand and reason away.

It is another one of those one-sided agreements. Home Away has all the benefit, you have nothing. Only a fool would agree to it. But they are making money which proves there is no shortage of fools.

Good luck getting away from them unscathed.
