Magazines.com Complaint - Magazines.com tricks consumers by automatically renewing magazines without their authorization

Review by h19102 on 2011-01-11
Subscriber beware: Magazines.com tricks consumers by automatically renewing magazines without previous authorization. This wastes consumers' time and often money. Last year I ordered magazines as a gift for a friend. I didn't know that Magazines.com automatically renewed my subscription until the charge came through on my credit card. The only way to reverse the charge was to have my bank block the company.
When ordering the magazine, I did not at any point to my knowledge authorize a renewal. While this may be stated in fine print, it is not information that is easily accessible to consumers. I can see no other reason for this practice than to trick people into spending more money. This is a unethical, unsustainable business practice. Please save yourself time and money by ordering magazines through more reliable outlets.

At Christmas time, I ordered 2 different magazines subscriptions from them and on the confirmation e-mail, it said it would automatically renew if I didn't cancel and they would send a reminder e-mail before the new subscription takes effect. Did you try calling them to cancel?

From their FAQ's:

Q. What is Preferred Subscription Service?

A. Preferred Subscription Service allows you to continue your subscription at the end of the subscription term without the hassle of remembering when to renew. You'll receive an email notification when it's time to renew, at which time you can choose not to renew your magazine. Otherwise, we'll charge the credit/debit card you used to make your purchase at the low subscriber rate then in effect. You may cancel at any time during your subscription by contacting Customer Care at 1-800-MAGAZINES. As always, Preferred Subscription Service orders come with the Magazines.com Satisfaction Guarantee. You will be 100% satisfied or you'll receive a 100% refund for all undelivered issues, at any time, for any reason.

your authorization was the first time you agreed to order the magazine.

I ordered a magazine as a gift in 2009. How surprised I was to find out that the company was able to charge renewals to my paypal account in 2010 and 2011. I definitely did not intend and I do not believe I authorized any automatic renewals from this company. Since the magazines were a gift, there was no way for me to know about the fraudulent charges, unless I noticed the paypal charge and figured out that it was a scam. Buyer beware.
