Dr William Thomas Complaint - Orthodontist in Poway

Review by Summer1966 on 2011-01-12
POWAY, CALIFORNIA -- When my orthodon'tic treatment went from bad to worse to a nightmare I asked the help from San Diego Dental Society but this organization said they couldn't help me because Dr. Thomas is not a member of their organization. I then contacted California Dental Association, and American Dental Association and guess what? He is not a member either. After 16 months in braces with Dr Thomas I am now with another orthodon'tist to fix Dr Thoma's work.

My experience is that Dr Thomas was very persuasive and I was caught up in his sales pitch and signed up for a treatment that was supposed to be better and faster than Invisalign. I had never heard about this specific technique/type of braces that he was offering and he didn't have one to show me. I do take responsibility that I was not a smart consumer and that it sounded too good to be true and I chose to believe it. He gave an estimate of 8 months of treatment time (about 6 visits) . I ended up living thru 16 months of hell (with over 40 visits to his office because of the many mistakes done during treatment) just to end up with a reversed smile (four front upper teeth shorter than side teeth).

Sample of the many problems: While Dr Thomas was putting the braces on me he realized that my dental chart said that the dentist had not given clearance as I had a lot of work that needed to be done. By then the braces were on. Doesn't he look at his patients chart before starting work? I needed a post and a crown and had cavities.

During some appointments I would hear the assistants telling Dr. Thomas they didn't have the right glue for the bracket/crown. Based on what I could overhear, I knew his assistant was using alternate glue, and sure enough, in a few days that same bracket would pop off and I would have to return to his office to have it fixed. That happened so many times that, Dr. Thomas decided to just remove the bracket and leave that tooth without one. When the braces were removed it was clear that the tooth moved to the wrong direction. His solution was to shave the front of the tooth until it aligned with the adjacent teeth. I went there to have my teeth straighten with the use of braces not buy shaving them to make it fit. Actually the position of this tooth was never a problem until he decided to resolve the problem by keep this tooth without a bracket. I am not the only one with this complaint (shaving the front ot the tooth to make it fit) about him, there are reviews on the Internet and at least one has this same complaint.
In the end he apologized for how my teeth turned out and said -Orthodon'tia is not an exact science.
What a big mistake to have chosen to Dr Thomas to put braces on me.
I had to have root canal done due to dental trauma to my teeth.

Is he not a certified orthodontist? It sounds like he might be a fake if he was having so many problems and does not belong to any of the boards you contacted. You might have grounds for some sort of lawsuit especially if that is the case.

The first thing I would do is find out if this quack has a license to practice. If not, I'd sue his teeth off! The orthodontist who corrected the work might even be willing to testify. At the very least, you should get all of your money back and be reimbursed for the corrective work.
