Lowe's Complaint - Never Use a Lowe's Contractor for Door Installation
FREDERICK, MARYLAND -- We had a front door replaced by Lowe's and used their installation service. The first thing we noticed was the new door was not centered in the opening and on one side there was about an inch of caulk. Called Lowe's and they had the installer come back and clean up the caulk and recaulk. Now I spent a lot for this door and I wanted a professional job so I called again and a Lowe's manager came out and said it looked good enough to him. I wish that was the extant of the problem. I will say we have had that door for a couple of years and have had nothing but problems. The first year we had hard blowing rain and it came in under the door. I called and they said we could adjust the sill so we did until there was no light seen. It rained again and water came in again so we re-adjusted the sill. Then last winter is was very cold around the door and I could feel air coming in under the door so I caulked around the bottom of the door. Then spring came. Now this winter we had another really bad rain and water came under the door again. It is cold and windy and it is 20 degrees cooler in the entry way. I can feel the air blowing in around the door trim - I can only guess there is no insulation put there. I can feel it coming in under the door still and around the door especially in a couple of places. The weather stripping at the top by the hinges has a one inch gap so there is air coming in there and by the latch and other places. I may as well have a window open. So I am going to call a contractor and have them come take the door out and put it in right. After looking online it appears the installers probably did not put caulk under the sill plate and I have water not only coming in under the door but also into the basement under the door, we thought it was coming from somewhere else but it is just too coincidental. I guess the moral is find a good contractor yourself and don't use the big box contractors! It is hard to tell what we will find and after the first go around with Lowe's we never bothered to call them again as we received no satisfaction whatsoever. If they would like to come out and look at it they are more than welcome. I sent an email recently to their customer service but have not heard anything back.
