Coast National Insurance Company, a division of Bristol West Complaint - Claims Procedures
CALIFORNIA -- My son was rear-ended by a Coast National customer on 8/23/04.
The first auto appraiser didn't know the difference between low-profile tires and regular tires, 9/32" and 5/32" tread, broken windows and California kit windows, water-cooled and air-cooled engines, and dry pavement and pavement with auto fluids on it. He also added 100,000 miles to the actual odometer reading.
They give comp car values 1,000 and 2,000 miles away from where you live.
They low-ball you on your car value. They fight against paying for actual expenses you incur trying to prove to them that their appraiser is lying and that you are telling the truth.
They try to starve you to death by not paying ANY medical expenses until you are ready to sign off the claim. Too bad if you can't work and too bad if you don't have your own health insurance. (By the way, they either tell you they will be paying the bills or they let you believe that they will BUT THEY DON'T.)
They tell you that you should have gone back to work EVEN IF your employer sends you home until you are back to full physical strength. They try to tell you that you can do your job with one hand although your employer says you can't.
They review and review and review all the things you have reviewed before. They hang up on you. They call you "Miss" when you are a "Mr." They try to trick your employer into saying that you were injured prior to the accident by throwing the wrong dates at him.
They lie lie lie and accuse you of being a liar. First they say they have something that you sent them then they say they don't. They say they will pay the medical bills "TODAY" and they don't. The list goes on and on. As this is being written it has been 8 months since my son was rear-ended by a Coast National insured. Not one medical bill has been paid. It seems they try to torture you into accepting less.
Suggestions: Write down the dates of all phone calls and a brief description of what was said. Record them (let them know you are recording them) if you can when they promise you things. Put as much in writing as you can. Make them put as much in writing as you can get them to do.

There you will find links to places you might get help as well as links to places that have complaints against them.
Good: they shuffle papers well.
Bad: they lie, they low-ball you, they don't answer their phones, they hang up on you, and they keep writing car insurance!
