Diamonds International Complaint - Fraudulent sales/overpriced products - Asher tanzanite and opal ring and Michele watch

Asher tanzanite and opal ring and Michele watch - Complaint
Review by mspville74 on 2011-01-15
I purchased an Asher tanzanite and opal ring along with a Michele watch at the DI in Belize while on a Carnival cruise. I agree with other posts - DO NOT BUY FROM DIAMONDS INTERNATIONAL!! The ring was bought for $1000 and came with an appraisal and receipt stating the tanzanite stone was 1.15 carats. The watch cost $300 and was delivered without any documentation. I contacted the watch manufacturer and learned the watch had been discontinued in 2004 - six years before I bought it. Unbelievable. I contacted Asher to get the "passport" for the ring as the Belize DI store could not locate the passport which they had represented "came with all Asher rings". After emailing Asher a photo of the ring, they sent the passport. Guess what? The tanzanite stone is only. 5 carats. I contacted DI's customer service and emailed them all the paperwork - receipt, appraisal, photos of the ring and a copy of the passport (which has a photo of the ring). They claim the passport is not for the ring I bought (the ID# on the receipt "does not match") yet the photo of the ring on the passport is THE EXACT RING PURCHASED!!

Purchasing jewelry in foreign countries is a crap shoot. The reason DI is operating in a place like Belize is because the laws there are not very strick about consumer protection. You can try contacting the Belize Bureau of Standards, though, via bbs.gov.bz/consumer and see if that helps, though.

I bought a tanzanite pendant with diamonds, Asher, through the NCL epic jewelry store. I received the certification and passport together with the sale. The price was fair, and I felt that I would rather pay even 20% more to receive the real goods. I bought it for my wife to remember the trip and for Christmas.

In nassau, i passed a DI store and out of curiosity I compared price check. For a tanzanite of the same sase and similar cut diamonds, they wanted 20% more than I paid on the ship, and this was not Asher. This was the un-negotiated priced, so I probably would have gotten a better final price.

My advice is to buy from reputable stores and it's worth a premium to get what you pay for. Buy from ship's store, which can reduce overpriced sticker 55%.
