Papa Ray's Cafe Compliment - Excellent, if you go at the right time

Review by Starlord on 2011-01-20
We had seen Papa Ray's, in Centralia, WA, every time we drove by, and every time said we had to try it some time. I had to see a new doctor, and had fasterd, so they could do a blood draw for labs. Crystal knew I had to eat soon, so we went to Papa Ray's on Tuesday afternoon at about 3:15 PM. The food was quite tasty, but I felt it was a bit pricey. I had the BBQ sandwich and Crystal ordered the hamburger. When the food arrived, I was amazed at the size of the plates, which was due mainly to the humongous pile of hot fries. My sandwiach was big chunks of beef, swimming in BBQ sauce that was perfect. I had to eat the sandwich with a fork, which was fine. Crystal seemed to enjoy the burger and fries. The coffee was delicious, and the waitress was very attentive. The atmosphere was informal, and the waitress wore jeans, blouse and apron. Turned out she was the owner as well. Every day has a special, that change from week to week, except Tuesday, which is Twofer Tuesday, when you get two dinneras for $13.25. The special kicks in at 4:00, so we went back this Tuesday after 4:00. Crystal was concerned tht we would both have to get the same thing, but they have a menu of about a half dozen dinners to choose from. Crystal got the meatloaf dinner and I got the BBQ ribs. She took the first bite of meatloaf and her face lit up, and she said the meatloaf was fantastic. The beef ribs (3) were done to a T and had just enough BBQ sauce on them. Again, we got a huge serving each of fries, and she got green beans and I got cole slaw, along with a green salad each. We ended up bringing a rib and one salad home. The place doesn't knock your eye out with fancy decor, but the food more than makes up for the down home atmpshere.

Good to know if we're ever hungry on our way to Seattle. I don't like sauce, so do you think the ribs, etc would taste as good without it? Thanks for the review!

Sounds delish.

When you state "excellent, if you go at the right time," I am left wondering what the right time is. On both of your visits you seemed to be very satisfied. Are the regular prices unreasonable for what you get?

The Two for $13.25 on Tuesdays starts at 4:00 p.m. There is really more on the plate than one person can eat. The prices aren't really unreasonable but more than what we normally spend on a meal. Denny's is even pricing themselves out of our price range. Prices are going up but not SSA.

@sing - Crystal says if you don't stop when you go through, she will be very sad. We are right off I-5, Exit 79. I'll send you our number so we can have coffee. @trmn8r - The regular prices are not unreasonable for what you get, but just a skosh above what we consider in our budgetary range. Our bill the first time we went was just under $20.00. Come to think of it, that is not all that high. The food is to die for, and the service is great.

I love places like this: where the focus is on the food. At some places, you pay a lot for fancy decor, but mediocre food. I would gladly pay a few bucks more for really good food and lackluster decor.

I eat weekly at this one Vietnamese joint the inside is runned down and looks like the place hasn't been cleaned in ages but the food is so authentic and good you kinda forget about it.

Good review star (VH)

I have to stop reading your reviews, Star! You're so good at it that it makes me hungry for everything in sight. I don't think $20 is high for the amount of good quality food you received. I prefer good food over fancy decor. I like a simple atmosphere. That way it's easier to see how clean everything is!
