Juniper Bank Complaint - Juniper credit injustice - Credit Card

Credit Card - Complaint
Review by sofijb on 2011-01-26
In June 2010 I put a charge on the credit card. When the payment was due I made the payment on the date it was due. The Juniper credit received the payment and applied it as late along with a late fee. In Aug 2010 I called Juniper credit and reported with. They agreed to remover the late fee.
Sept 2010 & Oct 2010 passed and they never removed the late fee. On the contrary they continued to add late fees, non payment fees, and interest to the account. In Oct 2010, I called again and reported this. They now wanted to come to a settlement with me and have me pay for half all these fees they had imposed. I told them I wouldn't pay a penny and to close the account. They told me the account had been deactivated but that it could not be closed till I paid it in full. Otherwise it would continue to accrue all these fees on a monthly basis.
Well the account has continued to accrue fees. The balance now is $252 in fees & interest alone. In addition they have been reporting me to the credit bureau for non-payment and has ruined my credit. I don't know what to do now. Please help.

You stated you made the payment "on the date it was due". You may want to review the terms and conditions of your card, most credit card companies have a caveat that they have a certain number of business days to apply your payment once it is received. It is likely this is their justification for posting the payment late.

There needs to be legisation to stop banks from fleecing their customers. If you overdraft, thats one thing but the fleecing of customers who don't overdraft needs to stop!

You did not specify if your payment was an online payment or a mail-in payment. If it was mailed it--they may have received it after the due date. You would then get the late fees. By refusing to pay the fees when originally levied, you have only made the situation worse for yourself. They have every right to tack on late fees if they did not get the payment by the specified date.

More details are needed to understand this complaint, and from this vantage point it is hard to know the root cause of the problem. For example, did they backtrack and decide not to forgive the first late fee? If so, was that late payment correctly charged within the terms of your agreement? Were there other late fees in later months? You have to go through month by month to figure out what if the bank did something wrong.

It is really unfortunate this was not resolved before it went to collections. It may be better to pay a bill you feel you don't owe, and then convince the bank later that you are correct, and obtain a refund.
