Erie Insurance Group Complaint - Unauthorized Bank Account Debit After Policy Cancelation, Refusal To Refund
This is a major problem. To add insult to injury, the customer service was horrible, and gave us a huge run around.
We had an auto insurance policy which we had to cancel because we moved to California. In November we had been told that Erie's policy is not covered in California. So filled out the paperwork to have our policy officially canceled, and mailed it in, weeks in advance. And then at the beginning of January Erie went ahead and debited our checking account for the amount of a full payment - even though we had canceled. We called them almost 4 weeks ago, asking them to refund the money. They said they would not refund it electronically (which is absurd, as they had taken it electronically), and would mail us a check. We gave them the updated address (which they had to begin with). Then they went and sent it to our old address in Illinois anyway.
Luckily we have mail forwarding and are in touch with our old landlord, but that check has still not arrived in California almost a month later! They are snotty when we have called them; they never should've taken the money in the first place; they should've refunded it electronically; they should've sent it back to the right address thereafter. When we asked to speak with supervisors, they gave us two incorrect (out of service) numbers.
Eventually they blamed it on a partner group (Hicks Insurance), whom we finally spoke to on the phone (a nicer group), and now they are saying the the refund when they finally re-issue it will be only $66. We are not talking the thousands that I've seen other people complain about here in regards to Erie, but in principal this is one of the worst, most frustrating group of thieves we've dealt with.
