Rite Aid Complaint - Employees May Be Rude For A Reason - Employment

Employment - Complaint
Review by keliheja on 2011-01-30
SALISBURY, MARYLAND -- These employees may be rude for a reason..it's how they're treated by the company. I have a relative that has worked for Rite Aid for years. Unless you're a store manager, you're screwed. They continually treat their employees like slaves. They cut hours on purpose so they lose their insurance. They don't post their schedules until the last minute, so there's no way you can schedule a dr's appt or anything else. They are now cutting their elderly employees hours down to 15 a week so they lose their benefits and their health insurance, the thing they need the most. My Mother is 72 years old and only works to keep her health insurance. My Father just passed away and now they're pulling the rug out from under her. This is what you get after 25 years of service. You are just a body, not a person in their eyes. My Mother can no longer drive and since my Dad passed, they've scheduled her to work every evening shift, so a good portion of her paycheck now goes to a taxi service.

None of my family, including extended family, will ever walk into a Rite Aid again. They make me sick the way they treat these employees. The bottom line is the almighty dollar, they don't care about you. I hear now that they're considering cutting everyone's hours and hiring more people just so they can get rid of the benefits. I hope they go bankrupt...it would serve them right. Their stores aren't even that nice compared to other drug stores. They probably won't even be surprised when the attorney contact them.

It appears they have many lawsuits. What they've done to a couple of these women is illegal. I hope they Win big, at least big enough to keep paying for health insurance.

No matter how badly a company may treat it's employee's, and let's face it, it happens in all companies, it is still NO reason to take it out on the customer's.

After all, without customer's, where would Rite Aid be???

I'm confused, your mother is 72 and still working there? Don't they get medicare? Is working for a private insurance really worth it? I would have retired by now and called it a day. 15 hours is plenty considering I don't even get that at my retail job!

Ytrop, she may not qualify for Medicare if she hasn't worked enough hours

Thanks, I have no idea how that whole thing works with retirement and social security and medicare. OP says she worked there 25 years. I would assume that's enough to cover?

depends on the place of employee.

Twenty years is long enough to retire from the military. However other civilian jobs may require more time... for example Dad worked forty-six years at his job before retiring.

However as for "rude employees"... I find that most employees are not rude to me. Why? Because I'm not rude to them. Too many people out there think "employe" means "personal servant / whipping post" and then they wonder why they aren't treated like royalty.

With respect, you mom is 72..is that correct? It's my understanding anyone choosing to work after the age of 70 is not penalized as far as SS and Medicare. NORMALLY after age 65 an employer cannot offer health insurance on his plan. Are you speaking of the employer reimbursing your mom for what is deducted from her SS check?

Your mom can draw on your recently deceased dad's SS instead of her own. That might suit her situation better.

The OP didn't say if her mother was on Medicare or not. Being someone who is on Medicare, I can tell you it's ok, but not like the insurance I was used to when I worked. Take prescription drug coverage. Once you hit a certain level, and I think that's $2800, you have to pay full price for your meds. Kicker is, they figure not only what they pay as their part of your med coverage, but what your copay is as well. So, I not only pay my copay when I get the med, it also is added into the running total towards the infamous donut hole.

I can see why 15 hours a week may not help the OP's mother much.

Reduction in hours in order to not pay benefits, hiring more part time personnel to avoid paying benefits - all of these are standard retail practices throughout the country. The bottom line is that the retailer is interested in just that "the bottom line".

When many Americans jumped on the "anti union" bandwagon a decade or so ago they essentially caused these practices to come into effect.
