BMW USA, motorcycles Complaint - Gas tank disappiontment

Review by beemer13 on 2011-02-14
I have had 4 BMW motorcycles, all were excellent bikes, until now. The gas tank on my 2007 K1200R sport started leaking at 2 months out of warranty. It is obvious there is a material defect on the tank. Customer service has been no help what so ever.

Out of Warranty = Out of Warranty

I have a 1200RT, and I admit I'd be a bit ticked if the tank started leaking. However, I am a believer in the concept of warranties. So, I'd pay for it. That's the downside of buying stuff - it breaks at some point, unless it is a bar of gold or something.

What started leaking on the tank? Was it a seam? A hole? I have to say, that I have been eyeing a couple of BMW models. One of the big reasons is BMW's reputation for building quality motorcycles that last. To hear of this issue is extremely disappointing.

Was the leak coming from the petcock?

The bottom line is that everything will stop working or break. Nothing last forever and once you start using something, components will fail. Warranties are supposed to let the manufactuer back up their product for a certain period of time. Once that timeframe passes, the responsibility falls on the purchaser. Even if it's one hour, one day, one week, even one year. Sometimes you can purchase an extended warranty. It sounds like you didn't so you have to pay to fix it. That's the way the world works.

green - lol. i had to look that one up... it somewhat took me by surprise.

but yeah, a flow control valve could be something to check.

I would think an 07 would be fuel-injected and wouldn't even have a petcock. But anyway, I've had Beemers for YEARS and never had a tank leak. I'd have to know where it was leaking from to even know if this post was meaningful or not. These things go 40 years without problems like that if they're even halfway taken care of, so I'm a bit suspect...

That's what I'm curious about. Is it something in the fuel delivery, like a gasket or a seal; or is it a hole worn through the tank? Is it a seam in the tank? A 3 year old tank should not be leaking unless it's somewhere in the fuel delivery or a defective tank.
