PHILIPS/MAGNAVOX Complaint - DEFECTIVE PRODUCT - MAGNAVOX DVD/VCR

Review by LEC21230 on 2005-04-21
GLEN BURNIE, MARYLAND -- IN AUGSUST OF 2004 I PURCHASED A MAGNAVOX DVD/VCR
PLAYER, MODEL MDV560VR. WE DIDN'T SET UP THE UNIT UNTIL NOVEMBER, BECAUSE ITS USED ON A TV THAT WE ONLY WATCH MOVIES ON OCCAISIONALLY. WE PLAYED A COUPLE OF VHS MOVIES, BUT DIDN'T TRY THE DVD BECAUSE WE DIDN'T OWN ANY AT THAT TIME. IN MARCH OF 2005 WAS OUR FIRST ATTEMPT AT PLAYING A DVD. TO OUR SURPRISE, IT WOULDN'T WORK. I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT AFTER 30 MINUTES OF TRYING EVERYTHING THEY SUGGESTED, IT WAS DETERMINED THERE WAS A DEFECT. I WAS TOLD IT WAS
OUT OF WARRANTY AND THAT I COULD TAKE IT TO A REPAIR SHOP THAT REPAIRS THESE UNITS. I WASN'T HAPPY ABOUT PAYING 30.00 TO HAVE IT INSPECTED, BUT
THIS WAS A BRAND NEW UNIT ONLY USED TWICE. WHEN THE REPAIR SHOP CALLED ME BACK, THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE UNIT NEEDED A DVD ASSEMBLY AND THAT IT WASN'T AVAILABLE FROM MAGNAVOX. NEEDLESS TO SAY,
I WAS VERY ANGRY. I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AT MAGNAVOX AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD OR WOULD DO BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY.
I TOLD THEM IT SEEMED UNFAIR BECAUSE THE DVD NEVER WORKED AND WAS DEFECTIVE FROM THE FACTORY.
THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A COMPANY THAT COULD CARE LESS
ABOUT THERE PRODUCTS RELIABILITY OR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION.

You bought an electronic item in August, didn't hook it up until November, and didn't use the DVD player until March discovering that it was defective 7 months after you bought it? You, my friend, are simply outta luck. You have learned what warranties are for and why they only cover your behind for so many days. And tpebop also makes a good point about not buying electronic combos.

Most, if not all, "Philips" and/or "Magnavox" products which also go by the names of ESA/Sylvania/Symphonic/Emerson are all manufactured in China by Funai Corp.

I have a Yamaha Cr420... Still 'kickin'... Have a Sylvania VCR and I have had more problems getting it to record while I'm out. Magnavox, Emerson, etc., equates to Funai? Thanks for the tip, C.W.
