The Smog Shop Compliment - I Found A Trustworthy Auto Repair!

Review by triptips on 2011-02-19
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA -- 2 years ago my car failed smog due to high RPM. The state covered my repair at AC Auto Clinic that supposedly replaced 2 parts and overcharged both me and the state. The same garage passed the smog test yet I never noticed any drop in RPM and my tiny Civic kept gobbling up gas.

2 years later the car failed smog again for the same reason. This time I did my homework and called almost every garage on the list of BAR approved mechanics in San Francisco, Daly City and South San Francisco. I asked about my leaky water pump that needed a liter of water daily, but none of them made the connection that it could be the culprit. Instead, they claimed it had nothing to do with RPM, quoted prices from $450 and up and suggested to replace the timing belt at the same time. It was more than I could afford for a 20 year old car and I was considering to retire my beloved hatch.

The last garage on the list was The Smog Shop on Fell St. in San Francisco. To my relief the manager who answered the phone immediately connected the dots saying the low coolant level may cause RPM problems. He was my knight in shiny armor and thanks to his pleasant manner and sincere willingness to help I was ready to shell out $400 he quoted.

The car was fixed, the smog test was passed and I even got an oil change and a tire rotated. Best of all, now I found someone who would not see a cash cow ready for milking when a woman walks into a shop. Thanks, C! (rules don't allow names on the site)

That's how you gain - and keep - customers.

One of the reasons my car has served me well for 11 years is having a good mechanic to service it. Nice of you to pass this information on. Very helpful review.
