Jim Ellis Mazda Complaint - Beware Jim Ellis Mazda of Chamblee, GA

Review by dkapetansky on 2011-03-08
ATLANTA, GEORGIA -- When I brought my vehicle in because the Check Engine light was on, I was given a written estimate to diagnose the problem of $98. I agreed to the estimate, and the repair was made. When I went to settle the bill, I found I had been charged $313 for the diagnosis. I paid the bill because I needed my car, but if this isn't classic bait-and-switch, then I don't know what is.

As if this wasn't bad enough, when I finally got my car back, I discovered a deep new gouge in the paint on the rear bumper. They fixed it- sort of- but to me this seems like a most extreme kind of disregard for other people's valuable property. This kind of collateral damage is completely avoidable with any kind of care.

These people seem to be supremely indifferent to lying to you in writing and trashing your property. Think twice before investing any of your time, effort, or money here.

What explanation for the difference in cost to diagnose the problem was given? The $313 did not include any labor to actually fix the problem?

Sounds like a pretty shabby operation.

In Georgia the statutes regarding auto repairs state that:

In the event that:

(1) The written repair estimate contains only an
estimate for diagnostic work necessary to estimate the cost of repair, and such diagnostic work has been completed;

(2) A determination is made by a motor vehicle repair shop that the actual charges for the repair work will exceed the written estimate by more than 10 percent but will not exceed $50.00; or An implied partial waiver exists for diagnostic
work, and such diagnostic work has been completed,
the customer shall be promptly notified by telephone, mail, or other means of the additional repair work and the estimated cost thereof. A customer so notified shall,orally or in writing, authorize, modify, or cancel the order for repair.

If you were not offered the opportunity to approve the additional costs the shop is in violation and you may want to file a complaint with the State Attorney General.
