Sandy Springs Water District Complaint - Early Termination
I have been forced to do business with this company for almost ten years. I suspended my service for a while in 2007-2008 while I was serving with 101st Airborne in Afghanistan. Yet, with this history of payment, I found my water service to be turned off this morning, with a small printed tag on the meter threateninbg legal action should I tamper with this system.
So, I immediately appeared at the local office, where I was told that my bill had been due on February 15th. I responded that, after ten years, I expected at least thirty days and notification of an impending shutoff, when I was told that I had not been a customer for ten years. I explained that no, I was not a customer for the 2007-2008 years as a result of service in Afghanistan. I was told that I should have been sent a bill and a reminder notice, but that their office did not handle mailings and was not responsible for ensuring a customer's awareness of an impending shutoff.
While I'm sure that the company is legally within their rights in this policy, it does seem to be rather draconian to a simple guy like me. I would think perhaps at least a certified letter would be required of the utility before shutting off the most basic need of life for a young family. My wife, upon her dealings and knowledge of other's dealings with Sandy Springs Water, has always called them the "Water Nazis", and it appears that her estimation of apparent character is not that far off.
