Vizio Complaint - 14 Months Then Poof - DTV

DTV - Complaint
Review by tamian on 2011-03-10
Great unit, good color and sound. That is right up until it went dark with no hope of repair. Called in on service line. Cost of repair is greater than a new one.

Guess which brand I won't be buying.

This surprises me. We have two flat screen Vizio TV's that have been in use for 4-5 years. Have not had one problem with either of them. One was even shipped from Connecticut via UPS.

I hope this is not a trend for Vizio. Thank you for the post.

Just for fits and giggles, I took the unit to a local repair shop. Bad power supply. Repair cost would indeed be more than a new unit.

Any machine or appliance can have failures. Just because your Visio's power supply failed after 14 months is not a reason to think this is typical of the brand. More likely, you were just unlucky with this one. The same thing could happen to any brand TV.

However, it is surprising and disappointing that replacing a power supply would cost more than a new TV. I have replaced power supplies over the years in at least two computers, and my wife's iMac is at the Apple Store right now because its power supply failed.

With highly integrated devices like all in one computers, laptops and TVs the components like power supplies are usually unique to the model and need to be replaced with the exactly correct unit. In a more generic device like my tower PC, I could replace a power supply at relatively low cost with any number of 3rd party units that are compatible.

If a TV is so highly integrated that the power supply just comprises a set of components on the same circuit board with everything else, repair may become more expensive.
